ldd: ld-linux.so.2 exited with unknown exit code (139)

Bumped into this error message while building custom glibcs. Google results were mostly folks expressing confusion, so I thought I'd post as a decode.

What's going on here is that ldd, which is a bash script, is invoking the glibc dynamic loader for you with its --verify option. The ld-linux.so.2 thing? That's the dynamic loader. Yes, you can invoke it directly. Try it. And read the ldd bash script while you're at it. Anyway 139 = 128 + 11. When a command within a shell script gets signaled, its return value is 128 + the signal number. Signal number 11? SIGSEGV.

Probably what you want to do at this point is ulimit -c, invoke ld-linux.so.2 manually, and then use gdb to see what's causing it to fail. Good luck!

More Hiking - Shasta, Mt. Diablo, and Cataract Falls

Natsuko and I continue to be awed by the beauty of the bay area backcountry this year. We stopped by the McCloud Falls in Shasta, hiked to the summit of Mt. Diablo, and trekked up the deep canyon trails of Cataract Falls. The variety of landscapes within a few hours of San Francisco is really something.

Trichotillomania

The next time you're correcting someone else's spelling mistake, consider opting instead for a little humility. Trichotillomania (came up in Round 2) is the abnormal desire to tear one's hair out.

A16 and the Kyogen of Errors

If you have some free time in the next couple of days (6/2/05 or 6/3/05), do yourself a favor and go see the the Kyogen of Errors at the Palace of the Fine Arts in San Francisco. Kyogen is Japanese comic theater and Mansaku no Kai is a troupe with one of Japan's Living National Treasures, Mansai Nomura. If you lived in Japan, you'd be lucky to get tickets. Here, you can buy tickets and get decent seats the day before the performance! If you find you like this kind of stuff, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco maintains a Japanese event calendar that's worth checking from time to time.

Also, if you want to feel really good at the end of the evening, give yourself enough time to stop by for a pizza at A16. If you like mediumly thin crust pizza's, you will love this place. The pizza even eclipses, in my humble opinion, Tommaso's of North Beach and South Beach Cafe, my other two favorite pizza places.
